Is context engineering just a new name for RAG? Not quite. Here is how we got from one to the other: first we stuffed documents into prompts, then we added retrieval, then we noticed the real work was deciding what the model should see at all. Voice, offers, proof and a list of things to avoid all belong in that brief, and none of them come from a vector search. A year on, our retrieval layer is the smallest part of the system.
